It stars Samuel L. Jackson and Juliette Binoche, and is about an American reporter (Jackson) who is sent to South Africa to cover the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings. While there he meets an Afrikaans journalist (Binoche) who is in charge of covering the hearings for South Africa. I'm very excited about the movie, since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is the topic of my senior thesis. Check out the movie trailer here.

MMUN, Etc...

Okay, okay...sorry for the lack of updates. Things have been kinda crazy lately.

Finished my thesis and presented it to the Arkansas Political Science Association. I must admit, I was very nervous, what with two of my profs sitting in and all. But, I survived and did just fine. Didn't win best paper tho. Oh well.

The last full week in February I flew to St. Louis with some of my best friends for the Midwest Model United Nations conference. It was awesome. I represented Chile in the Economic and Social Council. We discussed combating the roots of terrorism as well as renewable forms of energy. Wrote one resolution and got it passed in committee as well as the plenary session, as well as yelled at France for trying to take out a section concerning lowering tariffs in one of our resolutions. Flying was an ordeal tho...missed my flight out of Little Rock and had to have a 4 hour layover in Atlanta, then when we were getting ready to leave the conference my flight back to Atlanta had been cancelled.

UPDATE: Apparently a couple weeks ago the USMA Model UN team won the National Championship at the Harvard National Model UN Conference for the first time in history. "You can have male friends without having to defend yourself and explain that nothing else is going on."
2. "Free drinks at bars! Men seem to know when you're single and tend to be very generous."
3. "You can spend as much time as you want with your family and nobody's lip will drag the ground."
4. "You can shave your legs and the razor is never dull from his face."
5. "You can talk to your girlfriends for hours on the phone without getting dirty, exasperated looks."
6. "You can spend your paycheck on what you want."
7. "You never have to worry if the milk carton had been directly drunk out of."
8. "You don't have to check to see if it's okay to tell someone yes or no to an invitation. You can accept on the spot."
9. "You can fill the fridge with fresh fruit and veggies, bottled water, one-percent milk and applesauce instead of cold cuts, beer and Velveeta."
10. "No more Cinemax, American Flyers, Steven Seagal or Jackie Chan. You are free to watch Emeril and Ming Tsai three times a day if you want."
11. "You can be happy with who you are, not who he wants you to be."
12. "If you are depressed or mad at the world for a few minutes, you don't have to worry about having your 'outlook on life' analyzed."
13. "You can eat garlic or onions without a second thought about breath mints."
14. "Not only are your dinners free when you go out on those first dates, but they take you out to nice places."
15. "You don't have to give yourself lame excuses for not devoting time to yourself."
16. "No snoring!"
17. "No one gets insulted when you spend the day at the beach checking out the lifeguards."
18. "You can have eight hours of undisturbed sleep with the covers all to yourself."
19. "You can go to bed in flannel and plaid rather than Frederick's and Victoria."
20. "The toilet seat issue -- need I say more?"

Finished...Finally

Yay! Read the article here.

Apparently, the camoflauge pattern on the new uniforms has been totally redesigned, insignia is attached by Velcro instead of being sewn on, and the material is wrinkle-free and machine washable. Also, new boots will be made of suede and won't require polishing like the old. According to the article, the new uniforms will be issued in coming months to units being sent to Iraq, soldiers entering basic training will be issued them by October, and all Army troops will be required to wear them by April 2008.

*sigh* I guess I'm just old-fashioned. Being an Army brat, I grew up with the old BDUs, and will have a hard time getting used to the new uniforms. I don't particularly like the new pattern. And not having to polish shoes? Where's the fun in that? I used to sit and watch my dad pull out the wooden shoe polishing kit my grandfather got him for graduation and polish his boots. My parents are planning on buying my brother a pair of Corcorans for graduation. I know one thing, I'm sure he'll be happy he won't have to iron his uniform...hahaha

ABC "Family" Channel?

While filpping through channels one night this weekend, and discovering that there was nothing on worth watching (surprise, surprise) I came across an ABC (formerly Fox) Family Channel movie called She Gets What She Wants. I usually somewhat enjoy ABC Family's Original Movies, and as there was nothing else on, I sat and watched it. Basic storyline is this: Starla is Miss Perfect and the queen of her high school in Texas. She decides to host Genevieve, a French exchange student, in order to make herself look good and improve her chances at getting into Wellsley College and becoming the next Katie Couric. However, little by little, Genevieve begins taking over her school, her friends, her family, and her dream of becoming a famous reporter.

There were several things the bothered me about this movie, however: First of all, there was quite a generous use of profanity used throughout the movie. Starla's two best friends, high schoolers I remind you, were both shown smoking incessently, and furthermore were insunated to be lesbians in a couple scenes. Starla's French teacher, a married man, was insunated as having a thing for teenage girls. And her mom was portrayed as an alcoholic. What bothered me was the fact that all these things were shown in a movie by ABC Famliy Channel. I definitely wouldn't want my kids watching something like that, and I am appalled that a channel that is supposed to be geared towards kids and families would make and show such a movie.

And the Nominees Are...

The current list of law schools I plan on applying to (in order of preferance)

1) Georgetown
2) George Washington
3) College of William and Mary
4) University of Maryland
5) University of Alabama
6) Washington University
7) Southern Methodist University
8) University of Oklahoma
9) University of Arkansas-Fayetteville

How Many More Days Till Summer Vacation?

Whew....got through my first day back since Christmas Break. Looks like African Development and African/African-American Lit are going to be no prob. My African Develpment prof is Belgian and speaks w/the thickest French accent (Lindsay...where are you when I need you! hahaha) but he's been nearly everywhere in Africa, so that's really cool. My African/African-American Lit class is going to be easy. I had the same prof for Core III (Honors) last year, and this class is set up the same way. I'm kinda excited that I actually know people in that class. Hannah Johnson and Haley Heath are both in it with me, they're really sweet. And a guy who's been in some of Whistler's classes with me sat behind me, and we talked about the dreaded Dr. McInnis who I have tomorrow for Civil Libs (mental note: keep up with case briefs!)

I love being back! I'm back in my apt. in Conway and classes start tomorrow. At least Civil Libs doesn't start till Friday. I'm glad to be back, and ready to get back into the school routine...exams, papers *ahem* procrastination *ahem*

I survived finals week, thank goodness, and got to spend the last night of finals week in Little Rock at the Republican Party Christmas Gala, which was fun. Got to hang out w/some of my best friends, dance, and finally de-stress. Unfortunately I locked my keys in my mom's car, so after the gala I had to have the UCAPD come and unlock my car for me in the middle of the night.

Spent most of the break hanging out with my family. Had my 21st birthday right before Christmas, and got to go to Miami for a week to watch OU play USC in the Orange Bowl (which is where the picture posted below is from.)

View from our hotel on South Beach

Heisman Race

Jason White and Adrian Peterson have both been named as two of the five Heisman finalists according to this SI article. That afternoon I had a meeting w/my thesis advisor who said my thesis so far was "gorgeous" and that I had all but walked on water this semester (yay!). I relaxed in the Forum for awhile and then a friend of mine took me to lunch. Friday night, Lindsay and Chris G. took Jerrad, Kibbey, Michael Herring, and I to Ashley's at the Capitol Hotel in LR as a birthday party for Jerrad and Jarred/going away party, since they'll be gone the entire semester in Europe (Lindsay's going to France, Chris to Vienna). Saturday afternoon I went to Sherwood with my roomate and a couple friends. We went to this Christmas celebration at her church. It was great! Tons of food, carriage rides, the choir and orchestra preformed Christmas carols (which I love) and then her church put on "The Best Christmas Pagent Ever." Afterwards we went to the River Market and walked around, and then watched "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." Sunday I went to her church, ate lunch, went to Barnes and Noble, and then came back to Conway.

Smooth Move

Hmm...
According to this article, a man called the police when his 16 year old daughter arrived home drunk. You take
Christmas very seriously. For you, it is a
religious festival, celebrating the birth of
the Saviour, and its current secularisation
really irritates you. You enjoy the period of
Advent leading up to Christmas, and attend any
local carol services you can find, as well as
the more contemplative Advent church services
each Sunday. You may be involved in Christmas
food collections or similar charity work. The
midnight service at your church, with candles
and carols, is one you look forward to all
year, and you also look forward to the family
get together on Christmas Day.

What Christmas Carol are you?
brought to you by Quizilla

Curse Word!

*sigh* this week is turning out pretty crappy. I've pretty much been all but guaranteed a "B" in American Political Thought, I was lost for half an hour in Searcy last night and got to the game at halftime, and I have so much work to do b/t now and Thursday my head's spinning.

The only thing that has gone right was my paper for President Hardin. Thank goodness for my friends, and for my brother. They have been the bright spots in an otherwise dreary last few days.

Okay, enough feeling sorry for myself. =) Time to suck it up and finish the week.

The Last Week Before Finals

Well, this is the last week of classes before finals. Boy, I cannot believe how quickly the semester has gone by. But, I am ready for it to be over. Today I had a paper due in American Political Thought, and tonight I got my paper back that I wrote for the President of UCA's election seminar (95! woo hoo!) and pulled an A in the class. After having coffee with a friend, I got back to my apartment and walked in to discover my apartment completely covered in streamers and balloons...and like 12 or so of my best friends in the hallway (apparently they called my rommie before Thanksgiving break to have her let them in as soon as I left for class, and had Chris stall for time by asking me to go have coffee.) My actual birthday isn't until the 20th, but with finals and Christmas break, we celebrated early. Tomorrow I have a presentation in Honors, which should actually be pretty fun, and then off to Searcy for some high school b-ball: VB vs. Benton. Wednesday will be pretty normal, my last class for Dr. Whistler. Thursday I have my weekly meeting with my thesis advisor, and Friday we have the day off. This weekend I'm supposed to hang out w/friends on Friday night and then go to Sherwood to have fun for the rest of the weekend. So, that's my week before finals in a nutshell. I just hope this weather changes, and fast. It's been pouring down rain all day and really cold, and supposed to continue through tomorrow.

My Thoughts and Prayers Go Out

This afternoon, 7 soldiers were killed when an Army helicopter from Ft. Looks like I'll be spending the 29th-4th going back and forth to Searcy to cheer on my younger brother in basketball instead. Not that I mind all that much. I enjoy watching my brother's games, and since he'll be off to West Point starting this summer, I won't get many more chances to hang out with him. So, I shall cheer for OU from the comfort of my own apartment instead of freezing cold @ Arrowhead Staduim in Kansas City. This is my second year to be involved in MUN, last year I was co-chair for the Economic and Social Council. This year I was chair for the Social and Humanitarian Committee. Unfortunately my committee was in a big auditorium so it was a little weird. I think I did fairly well for my first year as chair. I only had to get on to my delegates twice, once for half of them coming in half an hour late (and two countries coming back in an hour late) after dinner and the second time because I caught two of my delegates talking on their cell phones in my committee...grrr....But all in all they were hard workers, they had four resolutions passed and were working on another for their last topic when we ran out of time. The press we had this year did well, the newsletter they put out yesterday was hilarious. But anyway, I'm glad it's over. I was busy with the conference from 9am-10pm on Friday and then again from 7:30am -5:30pm yesterday, it's definitely been a long weekend. When you have to stop a roll call vote and ask the delegates if they would please respond in English, you know everybody's about ready to go home...lol

11-0 Baby!

OU crushed Baylor today, 35-0. Not to mention the incredible freshman running back Adrian Peterson tied the NCAA record for most 100-yard games by a freshman. Yay! Sooners went undefeated in the regular season...woo hoo! 11-0. Now it's on to the Big 12 Championship, which God willing, I'll be heading to with my family barring my younger bro doesn't have a basketball tourney. OU will beat whatever sorry team the Big 12 North will be sending, and hopefully an OU player will be bringing back some hardware in the Heisman department (doesn't matter...either Peterson or White will be just fine with me. Although I prefer Peterson, I don't think voters are willing to give it to a Freshman. I have to say, I think it's the coolest thing that Jason White has already made it clear that his vote is going to Peterson. How classy is that?) Then they'll be off to Miami for the Orange Bowl. This time they'll get that Sears trophy though.

Goodbye Lou

Looks like Lou Holtz is to retiring as head football coach for South Carolina.
...and who's his replacement? As we're all well aware, the exit polls in this election were incorrect. Now exit poll data will not be released until between 4 and 6 pm (as opposed to 1 pm in this past election). I'm honestly surprised that nobody realized earlier that the longer you conduct a poll, the more samples you have, the more accurate the numbers will be, especially since exit poll accuracy has been a problem in the past. I took AP Stats in high school and even I know this stuff. I mean, if you only take exit polls during the morning, they won't be representative of a large number of people who don't vote until the evenings, after they get off work. At any rate, after three straight elections and two different polling organizations, and the exit polls have accuracy issues every time, something is wrong with the polling process. Let's hope that they can fix the flaws before midterm elections.

Clinton Library Opening

Well, the Clinton Library opened today in LR. Considering it was pouring down rain today (*ick*) and cold, I'm really glad wasn't there after all. lol, when I caught the end of the opening on the news after class, I half-expected some signs of Republican mischief, after all the talk last year by some of my best friends concerning pulling a "covert op" the night before the opening.

This was by far my favorite line from the above NY Times article:

The $165 million William J. Every summer, OMP hosts 12 camps acros, each lasting a week. Methodist churches sign up and send groups of youth and adult drivers to a camp for a week. Usually there are about four churches per camp: somewhere around 60 youth and 15 drivers. The afternoon they get there, the campers and drivers are all split up into three groups, and then split even further into groups of four campers and one driver, called "family groups." These groups stay with each other the entire week. Every morning they are given their assignments and and spend all day working together. The jobs they do can range from building wheelchair ramps or porches, painting, reparing a roof, or simply doing some yardwork. After completing the day's assignment, the family groups head back to camp for dinner, free time, sharing, and evening worship.

During jr. high and high school, I went to OMP as a camper with my church. This summer I was given the privilege of being on OMP college staff. I served with two of the best people I know...Alexis Stamp and Aaron Randolph, and I can't tell you how much these two meant to me this summer. After a week of staff training at my church in Van Buren, it was nonstop to four camps over the summer: Psalms (between Fordyce and Warren), Cold Springs (in Conway) with the best director ever, and my major group leader for two years, Mark Walkley, and two camps in Canfield (about 15 miles north of Louisiana). Basically I was in charge of three or four family groups. It was my job to line up all their jobs for the week, get all the materials ordered, set up camp, and supervise all my groups during the day. I lost count of how many miles I put on my little car! One of the neatest things about being on staff this summer was that both my parents got to go as first-time drivers.

I could tell you stories of all the amazing people my groups worked for, and all my awesome campers, but that would take a loooong time. I promise tough, I will put up a pic or two and quick story sometime soon about Robert Parrish, one of the little kids I met this summer who touched my heart. One thing I will say is that I can't thank God enough for blessing me with an incredible summer.

hehehe, sorry, I know this was a long post. Please go check out Ozark Mission Project's website!
Here are a few pics from this summer. Enjoy!

P.E.S.T?

Check out this article from the Boca Raton News. Apparently a bunch of psychologists are upset about Rush Limbaugh's offer to provide therapy to distraught Kerry supporters. Here's a couple snippets:

The Boca Raton News reported last week that more than 30 distraught Kerry supporters in South Florida contacted the non-profit AHA following their candidate’s Nov. 3 concession to President Bush. AHA officials have diagnosed the disorder as Post Election Selection Trauma (PEST) and have scheduled the first of several free group therapy sessions for just after Thanksgiving.

“Rush Limbaugh has no clinical qualifications to counsel anyone,” [Sheila] Cooperman said. “He’s not only minimizing PEST, but he’s bastardizing the entire psychological field and our clinical expertise.”

[Douglas] Schooler said he did not expect the Republican gloating to stop anytime soon.

Obviously these psychologists have no sense of humor. Furthermore, this is America, this is what happens. Every four years we vote for the person we want to be President, the person with the most votes wins, and we move on. What I don't understand is why can't these distraught Democrats stop worrying about something that's over and done with and focus on important problems or issues that they can do something about? Since when does whining and complaining over something ever get anything accomplished?

First Post

Well, here goes y'all...my thoughts, etc...I'll try to post as often as possible.
